Hey ya!

So in case the GPOY picture didn’t tell the story I wanted it to tell, I splurged and bought myself a Nikon D3000 yesterday afternoon.

Moment of craziness? Happy graduation to me? Probably the first one but whatever the reason, I couldn’t be happier with the purchase. This camera is absolutely incredible and although I still have SO much to learn about photography, it was worth every cent.

Everything just seems to have more LIFE

…including FOOD!

A breakfast photo. Seriously, how long has it been since I’ve posted one of these babies? A LONG TIME.

In the mix:

  • The typical combo of 1/3 water, 1/3 milk, 1/3 oats
  • Half a banana
  • Half a cut up peach
  • A few shakes of cinnamon
  • A tbsp of PB stirred in
  • 1/3 cup Multigrain Cheerios

Other eats of the day included lots and lots of fruit

Watermelon and cheeries! (and a few unpictured pretzel sticks on the side)

OK, I didn’t actually EAT this but the coloring on it is absolutely beautiful. Fresh from my mom’s garden it was supposed to be a typical eggplant. Instead, she got a Japanese eggplant! Fancy veggies are fancy and I’m very curious to see if the taste varies at all.

 

Sidenote: I need to work on backdrops for my photos now. I mean, not that I don’t love the salad spinner and the random green pepper creepin’ in the back and everything but……

 

Dinner!

The fam had BLTs so I figured a deconstructed version would be fun. I still had the B and the L (spinach?) and the T so that’s all that matters!

  • Spinach
  • Tomato
  • 3 pieces crumbled bacon
  • Honey roasted peanuts
  • Carrot
  • Balsamic dressing

On the side I had half a slice of rye bread with some swiss cheese and peach-mango salsa. If you ever EVER get the chance, buy peach-mango salsa. It’s all the kick of salsa but instead the extra kick is from the unexpected sweetness from the chunks of the fruit.

 

Stepping away from the picture lovin’ for a moment, here’s a quick list of things I’ve done over the summer in case anyone was curious. Probably not but still….IT MAKES ME FEEL BETTER ABOUT MYSELF DON’T JUDGE ME.

Ahem, cue bullet points.

  • I ran the Teterboro 5K for the second year in a row and finished at 28:22 which is a full FOUR seconds faster than last year. Progress, what what!
  • I’ve been on a few interviews and they have all thus failed me. The job searching continues.
  • I’ve seen Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 FOUR times so far. Certainly wouldn’t mind seeing it a couple more times πŸ˜€
  • I’ve been driving all over New Jersey because I want to see my girls THAT badly
  • And I don’t regret it!
  • My sister and I joined Blink Fitness for a month thanks to Groupon! This girl hasn’t been to a legit gym since May. I feel like my entire life has been restored and it’s a beautiful thing.

That’s the most important points anyway. I’ve fallen way, way, way too far behind to catch up on every single thing so now I’m starting from scratch I guess. Woo for fresh starts!

My grandma’s 90th birthday is tomorrow so you know that the new camera (who does not have a name yet!) will be getting some exercise. So until then, this picture.

Sickness will NEVER hold me down.

Almost been a week exactly. Hmm. I’m noticing a “Weekend Update” pattern starting to set in. Who do I think I am? Tina Fey?

 

Actually, I really wouldn’t mind beingΒ  Tina Fey.

I’ve decided I want to be her AND Chelsea Handler when I grow up. A love child of the two if you will. A girl can dream, right? πŸ˜€

 

 

Another irrelevant fine way to begin a post! Let’s get onto the good stuff. And by good stuff, I actually mean the complete LACK of stuff I’ve done this week due to being sick.

 

 

Headache, aches, fever, fatigue, hackinghackinghacking cough and general wonkiness as far as the eye can see. This BLACK DEATHHH (as it was lovingly named) got me, roomie, Kat and my 4 apartment girls down the hall… ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Talk about good timing eh?

 

It started Sunday afternoon and it hit really hard on Valentines Day of all days! I thought it was hilarious and kept saying, “This is what happens when you don’t have a man on Valentines Day, you get the flu!”

Actually, Jensen and Jared ended up being our dates. They helped, a lot.

We have special feelings about these guys… I have nothing else to say on the matter πŸ˜‰

 

The DEATHHH has been slowly been decreasing since then and things are beginning to return back to normal. In the spirit of normal, here’s some pictures. Sickness caused me to slack in this department. My badddddd!

 

You know what isn’t bad though? Trying a new Chobani flavor!

This has definitely made it’s way to the higher part of my Chobani listing. I have mixed feelings about raspberry flavored things but this was just so GOOD. I had it with half of a cut up apple and a bunch of chocolate Goldfish and it was like eating dessert the whole time! Top five Chobani flavors. Ready? GO.

Oatmeal was definitely a good friend this week. You know, especially when I decided to not leave my room for almost two days.

I love this bowl, SO MUCH. And I also love Cate because although she might not completely understand my love for bowls, she humors me anyway ❀

With a mixture like this, it makes it hard to feel sick!

I revisited an old friend on Thursday. It’s been a while.

Oh hello Clif Bar, fancy seeing you here! I haven’t had this flavor in a longgggg time and kind of forgot how much of a replica to real carrot cake this is. It was complete with considerably large pieces of carrot and randomly placed frosting blobs. However, it was so much sweeter than I remember it to be! My sweet tooth is a powerful being so for me to say that really does mean something. Yeehaw!

This exercise was so much harder than I thought. While I’m pretty good with words, when put on the spot to describe the taste and smell of these foods, the words were nowhere to be seen! Although slightly disheartening, it’s a completely different aspect of food and only fuels my passion for it even more. Wheeeeeee!

I feel complete now!

Again with the inconsistency! I feel like ever since I started this blog I started off almost EVERY post with a disclaimer about how useless I am sometimes.

 

So wait… I’m consistent about warning people about my inconsistency? PARADOX FTW!


I’ve been Rider University-ing all over place and already feel somewhat stressed…maybe because senioritis has hit me? Either way, despite how long it has seemed, it’s only been a week move-in!

 

Look! A familiar face… my favorite of all the snacks

Good old banana with Chobani, granola and AB. Out of all the things I recommend on this blog, THIS is towards the top. Texture, taste and filling? Check, check, check.

 

 

SPEAKING OF OLD FRIENDS……

Can you sense my excitement? This past weekend I finally obtained a giant canister of oats out of necessity. Even my roomie commented that she couldn’t see me surviving until March without oatmeal. But alas, I now possess said oats and this morning’s breakfast was a beautiful thing.

  • 1/3 cup oats
  • 2/3 cup water
  • Chopped up apple
  • Cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup plain Chobani
  • 2 tbsp Special K granola
  • 1 tbsp PB

Oh oatmeal, I have missed you terribly. Remind me to write you a sonnet about how great my love is.

 

Other food stuffs.

Another example of my love for colorful plates. Not too shabby looking right? If I had had some blueberries I could have had the entire rainbow represented.

Excuse my while I go give myself a metal for the amount of beauty I am able to procure. πŸ˜‰

 

Sometimes I pat myself on the back for unnecessary reasons.

OK, to be perfectly honest, I love this picture. Maybe it’s the light or the fact that I love Chobani or maybe it was my makeshift color wheel. Either way, I’m proud.

 

I do have the more “down to business” shot though!

A mixture of the reminder of the yogurt (maybe 1/2 a cup?), 1/3 cup cinnamon Chex and a tsp of homemade PB… and my Matt Smith background for good measure πŸ™‚

 

The larger containers of Chobani most definitely triumph over the individual serving ones. I know I say this a lot but the convenience of the resealable top is something I greatly appreciate. When Chobani comes out with these in pineapple I’ll probably jump around with joy and then go buy 16 of them.

 

Also, I’m a winning wrapper.

Usually, my wraps are weak and I get served, like all the time.

 

 

Hahaha, sorry…. I can’t help but make rapper jokes. My bad!

 

 

The trick to rolling a perfect wrap depends on how much stuff you put in it. Vegetables are tasty but voluminous. Carrots, tomatoes, edamame, spinach and mushrooms take up a lot of room. Add some turkey breast and hummus and you’ll be lucky if it doesn’t burst at the seams! Eating a wrap with a knife and fork just isn’t the same so this is just another instance when portion control plays a key roll in food preparation… don’t over stuff!

 

 

Last part of the post is to touch on the topic you’ve all been waiting for… my food writing class! In all of my college career, I have never been more aggressive about getting into a class, EVER. It was a two week process of back and forth nonsense with my adviser, the registrar’s office and eventually, the head of the English department. It was worth it though and I would fight even harder next time if I had to.

 

In a nutshell, this class is already everything I dreamed it would be. A topic of all food, all the time. To even begin to describe how many amazing topics we’ve covered already would entail a completely different post. However, yesterday we had a “food experiment” that definitely sparked my interest.

 

Enter, Miraculin.

Taken from it’s name it’s referred to as the “miracle fruit”. It’s a natural sugar substitute and the fruit bonds the sweet receptors on the tongue. When the taste buds are exposed to this, foods that are normally acidic and sour actually taste sweet. According to an article from Discovery Health, it’s extremely popular (particularly in pill form) with dieters, diabetics and even cancer patients that say the fruit helps ease a side effect taste caused by chemotherapy.

 

I had never heard of this before and was more than excited to be able to experience it first hand. Our professor, Dr. Goldie, handed us each a Miraculin tablet that we had to let dissolve in our mouths. After, we each sampled an array of foods to test. This included lemons, limes, salt and vinegar chips and pickles.

Upon first bite into the lemon, it was unbelievable. The normal impulse to make a silly pucker face was nowhere to be seen. Instead, it tasted with sweet lemonade and actually REALLY enjoyable. Kat and I were besides ourselves in shock… I mean, to be honest, I had no clue that such a thing even existed!

The lime was also sweet but not as much as the lemon. The pickle, as Amelia and I both realized, didn’t really possess a taste. The crunchy texture was still there but the sourness of the brine had vanished. Personally, the chip was my favorite. I despise salt and vinegar chips and am pretty repulsed by them. However, once again, the taste was gone and if I didn’t know any better I would have thought that I was eating a plain old potato chip!

 

And that was only the SECOND class. Bisky only knows what kind of incredible things we’ll be addressing as time goes on. Kids, it’s a foodie’s dream and I couldn’t be happier about it πŸ™‚

 

 

That’s all I’ve got. I try to keep bringing about updates about what we’re in the class because it would be just plain mean if I didn’t let you guys know! Maybe I’ll even break out the camera and get some pictures of stuff. Now that would be a bold blogger move! Guess we’ll see!

Go shorty, it [was] your birthday!

Upon uploading my most recent pictures only reemphasizes the guilt I feel for such intense blog neglect. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, worst.blog.mommy.ever.

 

For what it’s worth though, I’ve been pretty busy what with moving back to Rider and celebrating my birthday and all that good stuff.

 

Oh yes, by the by, I turned 22 this past Sunday and it was the BEST birthday I have had to date. Let’s do a bit of recapping!

 

Considering the fact that I was leaving for Rider on Saturday, my family celebrated my birthday on Friday night by going out to dinner. All day I was being asked, “So, where are we going for dinner?”

Because I am one of the most indecisive people to ever exist ever, we ended up happening was that we went to the same restaurant we to for my birthday two years ago! Furthermore, Nana suggested it… I couldn’t even think of it myself. Heh.

The Crow’s Nest is quaint place that’s most well-known for their seafood. Guess who didn’t get seafood…. this guy. It was all really expensive and I felt bad ordering it. Look at me being frugal even when I’m not paying for it.

 

The table enjoyed crusty bread and a plate of peppers/jalapenos/pickles while flipping through the menus.

I nibbled on a piece of the bread but it was REALLY crusty and at the point of being too hard to eat. It’s OK though, I ate a pickle to make up for it.

Pretty sure Nana groaned whenever I took my camera out πŸ˜‰

 

Chubby Chubby always wants to get appetizers whenever we go out and Cate wanted onion rings. So, we got the stereotypical sampler platter of fried entities.

Mozzerella sticks, potato skins, chicken fingers and onion rings… like I said, the most typical of the typical. We have this joke that Cate and I never eat things like this in their entirety and instead cut everything into halves or pieces. I think it’s a good way to get a taste but not fill up before your actual dinner Although, I will say that I when I bit into the mozzerella stick I proceeded to immediately say, “Oh my GOD I forgot how good fried cheese is.”

 

 

Sidenote: I woke up the next morning with a stomach ache. Another fried food fail. Cripes.

 


For my dinner I ended up ordering a sandwich of pork and rapini (broccoli rabe!) on ciabatta bread.

I’ve never had broccoli rabe but I definitely enjoyed this cousin of my near and dear broccoli. Pretty sure it was cooked with garlic and that ended up working really well with the pork, which was perfectly tender. Also, I ate the fries. Normal, plain ole’ french fries. I’m trying to maintain the mentality that the world is not going to end just because I ate some fried potatoes. My only worry was making sure I had a good time… which I did, so mission accomplished.

 

Chubby had a good time to. He, unlike Nana, very much enjoys whenever I take my camera out. It gives him opportunities to do entertaining things.

Hahaha, someone was hungry! Those are actually the doggie bag plates… it was a lot of food!

 

We headed back home for dessert.

Yep, I made my own birthday cake. Nothing special though because I didn’t have time to plan out something special. Plain yellow cake with chocolate frosting and a giant pink sprinkle K on it.

Yes, I made a wish and no, I can’t tell you. This is a retake by the by (in case you can’t tell by the fact that my brother-in-law is CLEARLY not paying attention/he might be in the midst of eating something).

 

Chubby also contributed to the dessert fund. In enter, cherry chocolate brownies.

This has been a project for my father since Christmas. He’s scoured the internet for recipes and, over time, collected maraschino cherries, maraschino cherry juice, cherry concentrate and cherry pie filling. However, there was one thing he hadn’t yet acquired but desperately wanted.

Cherry extract. He wanted and he received and it turned his thumb red. But alas, he finally got to bake them…. and use his other Christmas present

Fancy brownie pan… just like on TV! It works really well surprisingly enough. All the brownies were cut to geometric perfection. Naturally, I was “roped” into tasting one.

With a tablespoon of extract in the recipe, the cherry flavor was VERY distinctive and although I like that tasted, it was a bit overpowering. We concluded that next time around the tablespoon shall be cut in half and there will be an addition of chocolate chips. Live and learn!

 

The next day included my last home breakfast… no more stove top oats! 😦

On top of the comic section and with the usual suspects:

I don’t even want to talk about how mad I am about it. Change of subject, the paper thought it was my birthday already… that was a lovely surprise.

Unfortunately, pictures from my actual birthday are, er, nonexistent but there was CAKE and BLONDIES.

Roomie bought the cake and Amelia made the blondies. Both were deliciously amazing. Naturally!

I’m [not] a real boy!

I think my name should become Keri “Every-Other-Day” LaForge. This seems to be becoming a habit for me… remember when I wanted to be regular?

 

 

Sounds like someone’s blog isn’t getting enough fiber! Hahahahaha.

 

 

Ahem, apparently I can’t keep my hormones, dirty jokes or poo jokes out of my posts. I swear I’m not a 13 year-old boy.

 

 


I mean, 13 year-old boys don’t get an unusual amount of joy using Hello Kitty bowls and grandma mugs. Although, I don’t know too much about little fellas nowadays… maybe they DO enjoy things like that?

1/4 cup of LaForge trail mix, 1 tbsp peanuts and 1/3 cup chocolate “crack” Chex… and some afternoon delight coffee.

 

 

Oh look, a dirty reference. PG RATING LAFORGE. PG RATING.

 

 

In other news, esterday I finally got to enjoy my HMPB in a real meal.

I ended up dipping the apples AND the carrots in the PB.

Oh my bisky I don’t know how I limited myself to just a tbsp… it’s just SO good! Also had some hummus because I also wanted to be able to dip the cucumbers.

 

But…but…but wait…EVERYTHING goes with nut butters. Why didn’t I think to try it? Food bloggers are adventurous! That’s it. I’m going to try it tomorrow. Keep a lookout for such a taste test. It’s happening.

 

Two days of oats. Both overtaken by an overabundance of cereal.

They both had the typical fixings (1/3 oats, 1/4 cup milk, 2/3 cup water) toppings varied though!

 

Left:

  • 1/3 cup cinnamon Chex
  • 1/3 cup multigrain Cheerios
  • 1 tbsp AB

Right (which I enjoyed FAR more):

  • I ended up making it somewhat “pie-like”. On top of the oats I put a few tbsps of vanilla yogurt mixed with 1 tsp WCPB
  • THEN I added 1/3 cup of crushed chocolate Chex
  • Also added 1/4 cup multigrain Cheerios… I should have crushed them too!

 

The layers of the oats and yogurt and crunchy top was incredible. Definitely a great twist on my usual bowl of oats. Layers are great!

 

 

Sidenote: I’m trying very hard to control my desire to throw in multiple jokes/quotes from Shrek about Donkey and layers and parfaits and onions. Instead, I just went to Youtube and watched the scene and laughed about it.

 


OK… so maybe I AM not a 13 year-old boy.

 

 

………..one that likes spinach!

I took the last of the liquid platinum and added a TON of steam bag spinach to it (at least 2 cups), a diced carrot for more color and a piece of cardboard. Not surprising anyone, I really enjoyed the spinach addition. It bulked up the nutrition like WHOA and eating it with cardboard? It was kind of like healthy spinach dip!

 

To finish up this post I’ve got a few random quips:

  • Old Navy is having some AMAZING sales. Everything is on clearance and then take an addition 50% off! I got 2 shirts and a dress for 10 bucks. I’m going back tomorrow, you should all go too.
  • My dog thinks he’s a mountain man

  • Swifter’s aren’t just for the floor anymore!
  • I started laughing like a loon when I saw her doing this. She didn’t think it was funny and proceeded to shove the Swifter in my face to prove the point that we do in fact need to sweep our walls.
  • When Nana saw me bring my laptop and get settled into my “office” she said out loud, “Damn, I have work to do too.”Β  From the sounds of it, Nana has decided that my blogging is “work”… I WISH THIS WAS WHAT I DID FOR A LIVING. I would be the happiest of all the 13 year-old boys!
  • Got to give a quick shout out to my girl Jessi! I know you’re reading this πŸ˜€

 

Last thing… the comments. Guys, you rock. The fact that everyone is so nice and actually come to read my blog makes me happier than I can possibly say. Whenever I see a comment I may or may not get REALLY gooey. Thank you everyone!

Another chili [chilly] day

Two posts in the same day! Sometimes I post multiple times in one day and sometimes I don’t post for a week… look at me being inconsistent.

 

But that’s unimportant. You know what is important? Chubby’s chili.

 

Actually, it’s called Chief’s Chili. My dad has three brothers and they all have nicknames and my dad was dubbed as Chief.

In case you want to know, and I know you do, my uncle’s nicknames are Otto, Speedy and Weiner.

 

Heh.

 

Here we go chili here we go! *clap clap*

Beautiful is it not? Veggie filled and delicious. Chubby constantly stresses the fact that he uses extremely lean ground beef when he makes it. He’s also very generous with the herbs and spices so the flavor is out-of-control awesome.

 

Another point for healthy LaForges!

I’ve been eating this exact thing for multiple meals these past couple day. Chili on top of lots of romaine with a side of cardboard. The chili has a nice spicy kick to it which I LOVE. It’s just so good… I can’t stop eating it! No, I don’t need a chili intervention.

 

At least not yet. I’ll get back to you about that.

 

Nana made a pizza and made me take a picture of it.

If I were to give an award for best thing to photograph ever it would definitely be oatmeal

I think my picture taking skills are improving a little bit. Maybe?

Even if no one else agrees, it was still delicious! I changed it up from my usual handful of blueberries and added some cinnamon apple pieces instead.

  • 1/3 cup oats
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2/3 cup water
  • Half a banana
  • 1 tbsp flax seed
  • Half an apple cut up and microwaved with cinnamon
  • A mixture of 2 tbsp vanilla Chobani and 2 tsp AB

Nice and warm and perfect. Ha bisky!

 

And that’s all I’ve got for ya. I need to go ask the parentals if any of my assistance is required as we prepare for yet ANOTHER snow storm. The weather people are talking 12 to 18 inches this time. Oh boyyyyy. It’s OK though… and do you know why?

 

The stationary bike has relocated into the dungeon AKA right outside of my room in the basement. Guess who can bike whenever she wants and without 16 million layers?!?

New year. New bisky.

So, I’ve been an extremely extremely extremely neglectful blog mommy/blog follower. Not good. Not good in the least bit.

 

But alas, it’s a new year and that means a fresh start…. and no, I do not feel that I am making excuses for myself.

 

Well… even if I am… you guys still love me right?

 

RIGHT?!?!

 

Er…. Happy 2011?

 

OK, I’ve got a ton of pictures so I’m going to stop digging myself deeper in a hole and just get on with it.

I think one of my resolutions will be to take pictures that aren’t ridiculously unattractive.

 

The Saddlebrook Diner and I were finally reunited. No matter how much of a health nut I may become, I will never give up my diner sweet potato fries. EVER.

Just like my roomie, Liz wanted her food to make an appearance on the blog. Haha, yay! She had a chicken caesar wrap and I indulged in a chicken caruso wrap. It was lovely and had spinach, mushrooms, mozzerella cheese and grilled chicken. I killed this plate… there were no sweet potato survivors.

 

I’m always asking if anyone wants me make them breakfast and on the day of new years eve, Cate finally took me up on my offer.

Guess who got to break out the big pot?!

Check out that steam, ooooh, ahhhh.

Into the pot went:

  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 1 cup oats
  • Dash of salt

While I was cutting up apples for mine I asked Cate to take a picture of hers for me. Heehee, she even got her mug in on it.

Her toppings included cranberries, walnuts, coconut and WCPB…. and the coveted skinny spoon! Boo πŸ˜›

When it comes to actual new years eve, let’s just say roomie, Kat and I has a grand ole’ celebration. Here’s some pictures. Heh.

 

Kat and I sat in a Wawa parking lot while we waited from roomie to get out of work. We bought some food because we’re knuckleheads and forget to eat sometimes.

I had a 6-inch whole wheat sub with turkey, swiss cheese, tomato, lettuce, pickles, roasted red peppers and oil and vinegar.

It was quite tasty! But VERY messy.

 

Also had some crisps!

Also had a small white hot chocolate from D & D during the drive… you know, because I’m a weirdo and immensely enjoy drinking vanilla frosting.

We had a bunch of time to kill before we had to leave so we ate mini-strombolis and watched Eclipse.

I was happy about these guys because my mom tends to make them on new years as well. Awww.

 

I would like to point out how truly funny the Twilight movies are. At one point I was legit crying with laughter. Do you know why I was crying ? BECAUSE OF R. PAT’S FACE.

You know we love you man… you just have a great face to laugh at!

There’s probably at least 70 other pictures from that night but that’s another story. New years day is also another story. Let’s just say it involved whining, burping, cannolis and the most ridiculous trip to Panera that has ever happened ever.

 

NYE was everything NYE should be. Tada πŸ˜€

 

Last part… my breakfast this morning was awesome.

OK, pretty food presentation definitely is on my resolution list.

I tried the melted banana trick today. What I mean is I threw half a banana with cinnamon, sliced longways, into a small pan on high. You can’t see it but it got melty and caramelized and smelled incredible to boot!

I put half a tbsp of AB on a piece of whole wheat bread and then threw the banana on top. Then I cut up half an apple into slices, popped it in the microwave for 30 seconds and put them on top.

I then made my favorite combo of Chobani/PB and dolloped that on top.

 

Oh my bisky it was SO GOOD. I ate it open faced but next time, it’s definitely going to be in sandwich form… and with more banana too!

 

And that’s the end of the post finally. Tomorrow I’ll get around to posting my recap/resolutions (better late than never!) but for now, I’m out.

P.S.

ONE more thing, I swear. After not running for over a week (I know, awful isn’t it?) I finally got back out there. The paths at my favorite park were cleared so it was back to business.Β  Running in the cold has never felt better (32 degrees!) and 4 miles happened in a flash.

The addiction has returned. WOOOOOOO!
